Brighton girls open season with win!
Brighton High School Sports Tuesday's season opener for the Brighton girls basketball team didn't win many style points, but the Bulldogs didn't care. Getting a 59-49 win over Saginaw Arthur Hill was satisfying enough.

"It feels good to finally beat them," senior Dayna Modrzynski said, "because we lost to them the last few times we played them."

In fact, it was the first time under coach Jason Piepho that the Bulldogs had beaten the Lumberjacks, and there was more than a little relief in Piepho's voice when talking about the win.

"They're a good team," he said. "They have three really good players. We had them on the ropes a couple of times, but they made plays to sneak back in."

But the Bulldogs, who learned the art of finishing games last year, pulled away with a 12-3 spurt down the stretch after Arthur Hill got to within one, 47-46, near the midpoint of the fourth quarter.

Brighton fifth at state meet - Relays power Bulldogs swimmers to best-ever finish
Brighton High School Sports Nobody on the Brighton girls swim team went home empty-handed after Saturday's Division 1 state swimming and diving finals at Eastern Michigan University.

"In this meet, all three of our relays qualified in the top eight," Brighton senior Marybeth Hall said. "Brighton has never done that before. It's really exciting. Everyone on our state team is all-state, from the freshmen to the seniors. That's pretty neat."

The Bulldogs took fifth in the medley relay and eighth in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Hall competed on the medley and 400 free relay teams, in addition to swimming the individual medley and butterfly.

"In the medley relay, we got All-American consideration time," Hall said. "So we might end up getting All-American, and that would be really neat as well."

When it was all said and done, the Bulldogs placed fifth overall, which is the team's highest-ever finish.

"It's awesome," Brighton assistant coach Megan Hickman said. "Especially, considering two years ago, when Marybeth was a sophomore, she was the only one to make it back for the second day. We had no relays, nothing. Last year, we placed seventh and had two relays make it back, but only one was all-state. This year, we had all three relays back and they all went all-state. There are only three teams that did that."

Bulldogs aim high at states - Brighton may improve on last year's 7th-place finish
Brighton High School Sports The Brighton girls swim team has the potential to finish in there somewhere at the Division 1 state swimming and diving meet this weekend.

The Bulldogs finished seventh last year and they have four more swimmers who qualified for individual events this season.

"We have a very, very strong state team," said Brighton senior Marybeth Hall, who is the No. 1 seed in both the individual medley and butterfly. "We're a young team, too, so we're only going to get faster."

All three of Brighton's relay teams are seeded in the top six and Morgan Zebley is seeded eighth in the butterfly. A top-eight finish garners all-state honors.

Hall finished second in the butterfly as a junior and sophomore and was second in the IM last year and third the year before. "I'd love to win either or both," Hall said. "If I swim fast and don't win that's OK, too. If I swim my fastest and the competition swims faster, you can't be upset with that. Someone has to get second." Hall was within two-hundredths of a second of winning the fly last year and was only seventh-tenths of a second off in the IM.
